UK News: Third man held over Omagh police murder

Police have arrested a third man in connection with the murder of Constable Ronan Kerr in Omagh, County Tyrone.

The 33-year-old man was arrested in the Omagh area. Police have been given an extra five days to question two other men over the murder of Constable Kerr, who was killed by a car bomb last Saturday.

Farewell to trucking chief

The funeral of trucking chief Edward Stobart was taking place today.

The service for Mr Stobart, who transformed his father's firm, Eddie Stobart, into a nationwide haulage giant, will be held at Carlisle Cathedral. Three of the famous green and red Eddie Stobart trucks will head the funeral convoy.

Peel projects an interest in famous studios group

Pinewood Shepperton has received an 87.8-million takeover bid from a company run by billionaire investor John Whittaker.

Peel Holdings, which recently sold the Trafford Centre to Capital Shopping Centres for 1.6 billion, has offered 190p per share for the business.

Pinewood, home to the Harry Potter and James Bond films, has studios in Pinewood in Buckinghamshire, and Shepperton and Teddington in Middlesex. Peel has built a 29.78 per cent stake in Pinewood.

Firefox author dies

Thriller writer Craig Thomas has died at the age of 69. The Cardiff-born author was best-known for his book Firefox, made into a Hollywood blockbuster starring Clint Eastwood as a US fighter pilot.

Thomas's novels were considered "meticulously" researched, with "cutting-edge technology" which made him an international bestseller, according to friends.

Stars' role call for arts policy

SIR Patrick Stewart has joined other stars who have signed and delivered a petition to Downing Street calling for a "coherent" arts policy.

More than 200 arts groups lost out on Arts Council funding. The petition asks for an "arts summit" to give the industry a clear direction.

Blackpool: A three-year-old boy was found drinking from a can of lager while his parents were at the pub. He was one of five youngsters living amid "shocking" conditions in a house in Blackpool. Angela Freer, 31, and Christopher Steele, 55, were given suspended sentences at Preston Crown Court after admitting neglect.

London: A man has been jailed for four and a half years for stealing a 1.2-million Stradivarius violin at Euston station. John Michael Maughan, 30, of no fixed address, took the instrument from Korean-born musician, Min-Jin Kym.
