UK News: Sian murder suspect held as search goes on

A MAN remains in police custody today suspected of killing nightclubber Sian O'Callaghan as police continue the search for a second murder victim. Painstaking new searches have been launched after detectives said a suspect gave them new information on the whereabouts of another murder victim.

Census enforcers stand by

A 100-STRONG unit of "non compliance" officers authorised to interview under caution is standing by to visit homes where the census is not filled in. The enforcers have been given powers to gather evidence. Anyone who repeatedly refuses to complete tomorrow's national survey will face criminal prosecution.

Up to 250,000 expected to join anti-cuts protest

Up TO A quarter of a million people were expected to join today's march and rally in London, the biggest union-organised event for over 20 years and the largest in the country since the anti-war march in 2003.

Teachers, nurses, midwives, NHS, council and other public sector workers will be joined by students, pensioners and direct action supporters, who are protesting against the coalition government's spending cuts. Around 4,500 police officers will be on duty.

Man faces charge over mum

A 50-YEAR-OLD man is due to appear in court today charged with the murder of his elderly mother. Neale James was charged after the body of 78-year-old Brenda James was found by specialist police search teams on the sprawling Goodwood Estate in Chichester, West Sussex on Thursday. A post-mortem revealed that she died from a "head injury caused by a weapon".

Skates on for ice dance finale

The three remaining Dancing On Ice contenders are limbering up before tomorrow's final. Ex-EastEnder Sam Attwater will battle it out with TV presenters Chloe Madeley, pictured, and Laura Hamilton. The trio have all picked up bumps and bruises but will be patched up and ready to skate.

Berkshire: Police are seeking witnesses after 350 sheep were stolen from a field. Thieves cut through a fence to gain access to the field in Clapton, Kintbury, Berkshire. Pc Will Smith, from Thames Valley Police, said: "The sheep were tagged and it is likely the offenders would have spent some time getting the sheep on to a lorry."

Cornwall: Film legend Martin Scorsese is to be a guest curator at an arty summer festival. The director, whose movies include The Godfather and Gangs Of New York, has programmed the films for Cornwall's Port Eliot Festival.
