UK News: Shot policeman had stopped Moat earlier

RAOUL Moat was stopped while driving his van by the policeman he later shot and injured, it was revealed today.

Pc David Rathband, who is blind after being blasted in the face by Moat, admitted he felt "intimidated" when he and a colleague pulled him over and treated Moat with "kid gloves".

Climate change effects

THE UK's seas are experiencing warmer temperatures, rising sea levels, changes in fish stocks and declines in breeding seabirds as a result of climate change, a report for the Government has found. It said some fish have moved 50-400km northwards over the past 30 years.

'Education on the cheap' warning for ministers

MINISTERS were today warned against introducing two-year university degrees amid concerns it will lead to "education on the cheap".

The University and College Union (UCU) said universities are not "academic sweatshops" and such degrees would stop staff carrying out vital research and other work.

The union also warned the Government against "rebranding" tuition fees and marketing them as a "graduate tax", saying the public will not accept it.

'Gay role model' Mandy

LORD Mandelson described himself as a "good role model" for gay people, as the fallout continued from the serialisation of his memoirs.

Tony Blair was reported to be "livid" over the portrayal of his premiership in his close ally's book The Third Man.

Advance extracts from the book in a newspaper this week have focused on the feuding between Mr Blair and his successor Gordon Brown.

'Grateful' Ross bows out

Jonathan Ross said he was "grateful, lucky and honoured" to have worked at the BBC as he recorded his last chat show for the corporation. As the recording drew to a close he thanked all his guests from the past 10 years, saying: "At least 95% of them were great."

ROCHDALE: A shopping centre installed new "squat" toilets for Asian customers after bosses went on a cultural awareness course. The Rochdale Exchange centre in the Lancashire town denied going "potty" with political correctness and dismissed suggestions of the "Islamification" of the great British toilet.

DORSET: A young angler reeled in what is thought to be the biggest goldfish ever found in Britain. The 5lb, 16in monster was caught in a lake in Poole by 16-year-old Nick Richards. It is thought to have been abandoned after outgrowing its tank.
