More foster carers needed

THE death of Baby Peter has led to a "chronic shortage" of foster carers, a charity warned today.

According to the Fostering Network, there are 10,000 fewer foster families than are needed after an "unprecedented rise" in the number of children being taken into care.

Controlled blast after car dumped at police station

ARMY bomb disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion on a car abandoned outside a police station in Northern Ireland.

The vehicle was left outside the New Barnsley station in west Belfast last night.

About 100 families were moved from their homes because of the alert. Police have not said if a bomb was inside the car or if a warning was given.

Yesterday a bomb was found under a soldier's car in Bangor, Co Down.

Map shows ageing Britain

ALMOST a quarter of the UK population will be aged over 65 in 20 years' time, rising to over 40 per cent in some areas of the country, government figures revealed today.

Ministers published an Age Map they said showed that the country had a "real silver lining" and "graphically illustrated" how an ageing population would need more public finances.

The BBC Radio 2 star attracted 8.48 million listeners to his breakfast show last quarter, down from the previous period's record total of 9.53 million.

Folkestone: Around 20 Eurotunnel passengers travelled to France and back again without being able to get off their shuttle train.

The "forgotten" passengers, going through the Channel Tunnel from Folkestone to Calais, were in seven vehicles which were loaded behind a wagon that had been left empty after an earlier fuel spill and were left on for the return journey.

Southampton: A 16-year-old boy suffered serious burns when he fell from a railway station platform on to a 750-volt live rail.

The incident happened at Swaythling station in Southampton.
