POLICE were questioning a man today in connection with the shooting of five-year-old Thusha Kamaleswaran.

The 19-year-old was detained in south London following the shooting on Tuesday in which the girl and another innocent bystander were caught in the crossfire of a suspected botched turf war attack inside a shop.

5bn Work Programme contracts to be unveiled

THE government was today set to unveil the latest phase of its "radical" welfare reforms by announcing contracts worth up to 5 billion to deliver its new Work Programme.

Ministers said private firms, voluntary groups and the public sector will be used to deliver the biggest-ever payments by results programme, adding that it could be used as a blueprint for other public services.

Contracts will be worth between 3bn and 5bn over seven years.

Eating issues action call

EXPERTS are calling for "urgent action" to improve the detection of eating disorders in children after new research revealed the extent of anorexia and bulimia among under-13s.

About three in every 100,000 children under 13 in the UK and Ireland has some sort of eating disorder, according to the study by experts from University College London's Institute of Child Health.

Classic texts 'dying out'

CLASSIC literature is at risk of dying out in schools, the Education Secretary warned today.

Blackpool: An earthquake shook homes in north-west England today, according to police.

A small tremor was felt in the Blackpool area at about 3.30am, a spokesman for Lancashire Police said.
