UK news: One in ten heads is assaulted by parents

As many as one in ten head-teachers has been physically assaulted by a pupil's parent or carer, a survey by the NAHT school leaders' union suggests.

Incidents reported by 1362 heads surveyed in England, Wales and Northern Ireland included being punched, spat on, kicked, head butted, bitten and sexually assaulted.

'Tesco Two' charged

Two people have been charged with offences after "Tesco protests" turned violent in Bristol.

Stephen Carroll, 32, from Bristol and a 17-year-old boy, also from the city, were among 30 people detained after the violence in Stokes Croft. They are both due before Bristol Magistrates' Court later.

Police release details of aircraft crash victims

Police have released further details of two men killed when their light aircraft crashed into an Essex lake.

The men died when their two-seater Yak 52 plane crashed into the lake at Ulting Lane, Langford, near Maldon at 1pm on Thursday.

One of the men killed was aged 33 and from Cirencester, Gloucestershire, and the other was a 43-year-old British national living in the Netherlands. Post-mortem examinations are due to take place today.

EU herbal ban begins

New European Union rules come into force today banning hundreds of traditional herbal remedies. The EU law aims to protect consumers from possible damaging side-effects of over-the-counter herbal medicines. For the first time, new regulations will allow only long-established and quality-controlled medicines to be sold. Herbal remedy practitioners fear they could be forced out of business.

Houllier out of hospital

Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier has been discharged from hospital, eight days after being admitted with chest pains. Houllier, 63, was admitted to hospital on April 20. He previously underwent major surgery after suffering heart-related problems in 2001.

Ipswich: A 37-year-old woman has died after a crash involving a fire engine and a motorcycle. Motorcyclist Alison Challis was pronounced dead in Ipswich Hospital after the accident. The fire engine was not responding to an emergency call at the time of the crash, Suffolk Police said.

Bolton: About 80 firefighters from across Lancashire and Greater Manchester are tackling a blaze on the moors above Bolton. Smoke from the fire, which is covering an area of several square miles, was blown towards Chorley. About 18 appliances are attending the scene of the fire.
