There are fundamental weaknesses in the way cosmetic surgery is carried out in the UK, an official review body has said.

The National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death found patients were at risk from a culture which saw teams "have a go" at operations they rarely performed.

Oliver announces arrival of new son on Twitter

Jamie Oliver was celebrating today after the birth of his first son.

The chef announced the arrival of the baby boy using his Twitter page, writing: "It's a baby boy guys !!! in shock, were all very happy."

He said the child will be called Buddy Oliver although added that the "full name is to come from mum".

The TV presenter and his wife Jools already have three daughters and Oliver has expressed his desire for a boy in the past.

Abuse priests still clergy

More than half of British Catholic priests convicted of sexually abusing children in the last decade are still listed as clergy members, an investigation has discovered.

The National Catholic Safeguarding Commission said any priest being investigated for an offence against a child is automatically removed from active ministry, but that the church had to apply to Rome to strip a priest of his title.

TV complaints spark probe

Media watchdog Ofcom is investigating illusionist Derren Brown's latest TV show after viewers complained about a scene portraying a man in a straitjacket on a railway track. Ofcom received 11 complaints about the set-up, where the man made a Houdini-style escape.

Cheshire: A tiny cow whose size saved her from the abattoir has been named the world's smallest. Swallow stands 33.5in tall from hind to foot - shorter than most sheep. The 11-year-old, who has produced nine calves, secured a slot in the 2011 Guinness World Records.

Tyneside: 'A Tyneside bar faces losing its licence if bosses continue to allow "lewd" behaviour by exotic dancers. Undercover police officers said the entertainment at the Caprice Hotel on South Parade, Whitley Bay, was "totally unacceptable". It is understood the dancers had been touching customers.
