UK news: Most victims of crime unsatisfied with police

Most victims of crime do not believe the police are doing a good job, research said today.

Satisfaction and confidence in the justice system drops after people come into contact with crime, according to research by Victim Support.

The charity blamed it on "years of neglect and misunderstanding" of victims' needs.

CCTV aids search for driver

Police are examining CCTV footage as the search continues for a hit-and-run driver who left a six-year-old boy to die.

Owen Wightman was hit by a car while out playing with his friend close to his home in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, on Saturday. Police urged the driver to come forward.

Brain abnormalities help explain drug addiction

Scientists have discovered brain abnormalities which could help explain why some people are more prone to drug addiction.

The findings suggest that the make-up of certain people's brains could mean they have a predisposition to substance abuse.

Researchers at the University of Cambridge have identified the abnormalities in the frontal lobe of cocaine users' brains which are linked to their compulsive cocaine-using behaviour.

Long lorries 'will kill more'

Government plans to allow longer lorries on UK roads could lead to more road deaths and put small hauliers out of business, campaign groups warned today.

Government research into having longer lorries is "misleading and inaccurate," said the Campaign for Better Transport (CBT).

They also said the lorry-lengthening plans could lead to six extra road deaths a year.
