UK news: Miliband to overhaul 'lost' Labour's policies

ED MILIBAND is to launch a comprehensive overhaul of Labour's policies as he vows to learn the lessons of the party's general election defeat in May.

Addressing the party's National Policy Forum in Gillingham, the leader was set to distance himself from his predecessors, saying New Labour had "lost its way".

Major's coalition call

FORMER prime minister Sir John Major has said the Conservative-Liberal coalition should be prepared to continue beyond the next election.

Sir John, speaking at Cambridge University, said he hoped a way could be found to "prolong co-operation" if necessary.

Colleges 'must ensure access for the poorest'

THE head of the Charity Commission stepped into the university tuition fees debate today, saying colleges needed to ensure access for the poorest people.

Dame Suzi Leather also indicated that universities' charitable status - worth millions of pounds a year in tax breaks - could come under review if people complained about being put off studying by high costs.

Her comments come after a series of nationwide demonstrations.

Cash habits 'unchanged'

THE majority of Britons are failing to change their saving and spending habits, despite three-quarters claiming to be worried about their finances, a survey shows.

Around 76 per cent of people said they were worried about the economy and their financial position.

But despite this, 68 per cent admitted they had not changed any of their financial habits, according to HSBC.
