UK News: Lucky lottery winners join millionaires' row

Three UK ticketholders won the EuroMillions jackpot in last night's draw, Camelot has said.

The winners each claimed a prize of 4,873,639.80, with two other players from Spain and Portugal also matching all the numbers. The winning main EuroMillions numbers were 2, 11, 24, 35 and 47.

Attempts by cyber-criminals and hostile intelligence agencies to attack the British government have been outlined by the foreign secretary.

Soldier dies in Afghan 'operational accident'

A SOLDIER from 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment has died in an "operational accident" in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said.

The incident, in the Nad Ali district of Helmand, was being investigated. His next of kin have been informed.

Task Force Helmand spokesman Lt Col David Eastman said of the soldier: "He has forfeited his life for the greater good, bringing hope to a people struggling to live their daily lives."

Women killed in blaze

Two women have died and another is in hospital after a fire broke out at a block of flats in south-east London.

Up to 50 firefighters tackled the flames on the top floor of the 16-storey Marine Tower in Abinger Grove, Deptford.

The London Ambulance Service said two people had died and four others were tended to by paramedics, one of whom was taken to hospital for further treatment.

Moat 'laughed at victim'

Shotgun killer Raoul Moat laughed seconds after shooting a policeman, Newcastle Crown Court has heard. Karl Ness, 26, and Qhuram Awan, 23, accused of helping Moat, made the claim during police interviews. They claim they were being held hostage.

Preston: Sixty-one people have been arrested following a three-week long operation to target organised crime. Police raided 46 homes in Preston and seized drugs with an estimated street value of 15,000, four cars and 46,000 in cash. Officers said the action was part of a crackdown on robbery, burglary, violence and drug-dealing.

Staffordshire: A man has died as a result of the storms that continued to batter the UK today. The 51-year-old motorist was killed on a rural road when his car was struck by a tree uprooted by high winds in Staffordshire. Winds reached 115mph in some areas.
