UK News: Labour 'must change' to secure new funds

THE Labour Party faces a downturn in union funding unless its next leader renounces wooing right-of-centre voters, GMB general secretary Paul Kenny said today.

In what appeared to be a warning to David Miliband, Mr Kenny said that Gordon Brown's successor must not offer "more of the same".

Food-pipe cancer spikes

RATES of food-pipe cancer in men spiked by 50 per cent over the last 25 years, figures today reveal.

Cancer Research UK said the annual number of men diagnosed with oesophageal (food pipe) cancer rose from 2600 in 1983 to 5100 in the last year for which data was available.

Spy last seen eight days before dead body found

BRITISH code-breaker Gareth Williams was last seen alive eight days before his corpse was found stuffed in a bag at his flat, police revealed.

A confirmed sighting of the 30-year-old was made on August 15 in London, officers said, as they continued to probe his suspicious death.

Meanwhile, Mr Williams' family last night hit out at rumours that suggested the dead man was involved in risky sexual practices. They said speculation had been "very distressing".

1bn dodgy drivers bill

UNINSURED and fraudulent drivers cost honest motorists 1.25 billion a year, it was claimed today.

Research found that policyholders have to cough up an additional 50 a year to subsidise the cost of fraudulent claims.

Young people are amongst the worst offenders, with almost a quarter admitting driving either without insurance, MOT or a licence.

Cumbria: A toddler died after being found in a pond in the grounds of his mother's home, police said. The 23-month-old boy, whose name was not released, was discovered by his mother at 5.15pm yesterday, at an unspecified address in Stank, Cumbria.

Cornwall: A father and son were seriously injured when they were thrown from a motorboat which then ran them over in the water twice at Pentewan Sands, north of Mevagissey in Cornwall. Both men were caught by the propeller of the 17ft Dory after the vessel hit the seabed, coastguards said.
