A REVIEW of the Territorial Army is to recommend that up to 5000 reservists should be trained so that they are ready for frontline duties, it was reported today.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is to ask the Treasury for 150 million to fund the proposal, which could pave the way for thousands of regular soldiers to be sacked, according to reports.

Police battle rioters in fresh night of violence

POLICE have been attacked by crowds of around 100 people after fresh disturbances erupted in Northern Ireland.

Petrol bombs, bricks, fireworks and other missiles were thrown at officers during the trouble in Portadown, Co Armagh, last night.

Police fired baton rounds at rioters after they gathered at Corcrain Road close to a sectarian flashpoint. Sinn Fein Assembly member John O'Dowd claimed Catholic families in the area were leaving bags as loyalists attacked again.

Policeman shot in chase

A POLICE officer has been shot in the arm while chasing three men in South Croydon, Scotland Yard said today.

The male Pc was hit by a bullet when one of the suspects opened fire on officers in Kingsdown Avenue at around 10pm yesterday.

His injuries are not believed to be life threatening. Three men have been arrested in connection with the incident and are in custody.

Darlington: Three football fans were arrested when a pre-season friendly match between Darlington and Newcastle United was disrupted by pitch invasions. Durham Police said three visiting Newcastle fans were arrested for "pitch incursion" as the match was halted due to fans on the pitch.
