UK News: Huhne warns of action against energy firms

Energy Secretary Chris Huhne issued a stark warning today to gas and electricity providers that he would step in unless they stopped imposing "outrageous" hidden price hikes on customers.

Mr Huhne stressed the coalition's determination to protect consumers at the Lib Dem party's conference.

Cuts threat to families

Police commissioners 'to cost an extra 100m'

Directly elected police and crime commissioners will cost 100 million more than the current system over the next five years, the Association of Police Authorities claimed.

The APA, which represents the authorities that will be replaced by the commissioners, said it was "unconvinced that this is a price the public are willing to pay".

It said that research showed the public does not want any individual responsible for policing to have an "obvious political allegiance".

British pair dead in Spain

A BRITISH couple were found dead at their home in Tenerife, Spanish police said.

The badly decomposed bodies were discovered in an apartment in the resort of Playa de Las Americas.

Police were reportedly alerted after neighbours noticed a smell coming from the property.

Officers broke in and found the bodies of a man, aged 57, and a 69-year-old woman.
