UK News: Hospitals hit by new drug-resistant bug

A NEW superbug which is resistant to antibiotics has been found in UK hospitals.

Experts say bacteria which make an enzyme called NDM-1 travelled back with NHS patients who had gone abroad to countries such as India and Pakistan for treatments. There have been about 50 cases in the UK so far.

THE Bank of England was set to highlight fresh doubts over the UK's fightback from recession today with forecasts of slowing growth and a spike in the cost of living.

Young brothers 'thought dead parents were asleep'

TWO young boys who were found in the same flat where the bodies of their mother and father were discovered thought their dead parents were asleep, it was reported today.

The couple were found inside the property in Shanklin, Isle of Wight on Monday.

The children, aged three and five reportedly found their father hanging. It is believed the woman may have been strangled.

Credit agency concerns

THE Information Commissioner said he was seeking an "urgent meeting" over Government plans to use credit rating agencies to root out benefit cheats.

Christopher Graham wants to discuss the proposals with the Department for Work and Pensions amid concerns over state snooping and the misuse of personal data.

Top civil servant to quit

BRITAIN'S top civil servant is set to step down during the course of the current parliament.

Cabinet Secretary Sir Gus O'Donnell had been due to retire at the general election but agreed to stay on and oversee the transition to coalition government, sources said.

While Sir Gus will not quit imminently, sources indicated he was likely to remain in post for a year or two rather than the entire five-year parliament.

Oxfordshire: The number of people speeding increased in Oxfordshire when speed cameras were deactivated. Speed cameras were switched off because of budget cuts, but radar equipment was left in some locations. Readings taken over five days found the number of drivers speeding increased by up to 88 per cent.

Cardiff: Police searching for a teenager who went missing after a night out have found a body in a river. Bryn Warren, 19, went missing after leaving a Cardiff nighclub in the early hours of Thursday morning following a night out with friends.
