UK news: Concerns over staffing raised before prison riot

Justice ministers were warned about staffing concerns at an open prison just weeks before rampaging inmates torched buildings.

The Independent Monitoring Board delivered a report to Justice Secretary Kenneth Clarke on December 16 about Ford Open Prison near Arundel, West Sussex.

Fewer immigrants wanted

NEARLY four out of five people believe the number of immigrants coming into Britain should be reduced, a Government survey revealed.

The poll, commissioned by the Communities and Local Government Department, showed only 19 per cent of people thought immigration should stay the same.

Breastfeeding claim refuted by health chiefs

HEALTH chiefs have insisted breast milk provides all the nutrients a baby needs up to six months of age after experts suggested exclusive breastfeeding for that length of time is not necessarily best.

UK guidelines are to breastfeed for six months before introducing solids. However the experts, led by a paediatrician from University College London's Institute of Child Health, say babies could suffer iron deficiency and may be more prone to allergies if they only receive breast milk.

Funding hope for dementia

EXPERTS in dementia are being urged to submit more bids for a slice of the Government's 1 billion pot of research funding. Ministers have pledged to prioritise dementia research from March and are offering extra support to ensure proposals are high enough quality.

Fewer research ideas are submitted for dementia than for other diseases and ministers want to boost its profile.
