UK News: Claims Dowler officer gave paper information

The police watchdog is investigating claims that an officer on the Milly Dowler murder case gave information to the News of the World. The allegation against the Surrey Police officer is from 2002. Last month it emerged the same officer had been taken off the Dowler case in 2002 for discussing it with a friend.

North Sea oil leak found

Royal Dutch Shell has said it is working to contain an oil leak at its Gannet Alpha Platform in the UK North Sea but declined to specify the size of the leak. A remote-operated vehicle was sent to check after a light sheen was noticed, according to a spokesman, who added that the leak had been "stemmed" significantly.

Search for missing tug crew member called off

The search for a crew member missing after a tug capsized and sank on the River Thames in London was called off last night as marine accident experts began an investigation into the accident.

Two other crew members were safely rescued after the tug, which was towing a barge with a crane on it, went down off Greenwich Pier in south London just before 11am Friday. A major search-and-rescue operation was launched, but was called off after four hours.

Man held over riot death

Police have been questioning a 22-year-old man over the murder of a pensioner who was attacked as he tried to stamp out a fire during the London riots.

Richard Bowes, 68, died in hospital after he was attacked in Springbridge Road in Ealing, west London, on Monday. The suspect was held on suspicion of murder, rioting and carrying out three burglaries, Scotland Yard said.

Cole lands Hollywood role

Cheryl Cole has landed her first part in a Hollywood movie alongside Cameron Diaz and Jennifer Lopez.

The former X-Factor judge is to make a small cameo appearance in the film What To Expect When You're Expecting, which focusses on four couples during pregnancy.

Essex: Two people have been arrested on suspicion of child neglect after a three-year-old girl was rescued from the roof of a four-storey block of flats. Essex Fire Service said the girl climbed through a window in Colchester before slipping and getting her foot trapped in guttering yesterday.

Darlington: Two police officers have been stabbed in a street in Darlington. The pair were called to reports of a man acting suspiciously. The force said he became violent when they approached. The wounds are not thought to be life threatening. A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.
