UK News: Call to hold interest rates to aid recovery

The Bank of England should hold interest rates at 0.5 per cent and consider pumping more money into the British economy to ensure a stable recovery, the British Chambers of Commerce said.

It warned the scale of current austerity measures could increase dangers of a double-dip recession.

Make move to cut cancer

More than 10,000 cases of breast and bowel cancer could be prevented each year if people took more exercise, experts said today.

Just 45 minutes of moderate activity a day could prevent 5500 cases of breast cancer in the UK, while 30 minutes could stop at least 4600 bowel cancer cases.

Bus campaign urges the Pope to ordain women

A 15,000 bus poster campaign aimed at persuading the Catholic Church to ordain women was launched today.

The posters with the slogan "Pope Benedict Ordain Women Now!" will run on London buses' city centre routes for four weeks.

The campaign by the Catholic Women's Ordination (CWO) group will coincide with the Pope's visit next month. Pat Brown, of CWO, claimed the Catholic Church was attempting to gag Catholics over the issue.

Reality TV is a turn-off

Viewers want to see more drama and documentaries than reality and celebrity shows, new research showed.

The survey of 2000 adults in today's Radio Times found 31 per cent wanted more drama, while 30 per cent would prefer to see more documentaries.

Just two per cent said they wanted more celebrity content, and three per cent wanted further reality TV.
