UK News: Cable says capitalism kills off competition

BUSINESS Secretary Vince Cable was set to launch an attack on rampant capitalism today in an attempt to soothe anxiety that the party is lurching to the right.

Announcing a wide-ranging probe into "murky" corporate activities, Mr Cable was to insist that unrestrained capitalism "kills competition".

Labour level with Tories

LABOUR drew level with the Conservatives in terms of the electorate's voting intentions, according to a poll released today.

The YouGov survey put both parties on 39 per cent, with the Liberal Democrats on 13 per cent. It is the first time the company had Labour level with the Tories since 2007.

Britons' pension saving 'is falling billions short'

THE UK has the biggest pension gap in Europe, with Britons needing to increase the amount they save by thousands of pounds a year to secure a decent retirement income, research said today.

The study, carried out by insurer Aviva and accountants Deloitte, estimates that UK workers are collectively saving 317.5 billion a year too little.

The figures come as it emerged the UK is facing a dramatic rise in pensioners as a record number of people turn 65 in 2012.

Clegg urges action on aid

DEPUTY Prime Minister Nick Clegg was today set to urge rich countries to live up to their promises on aid as he announces that Britain is to increase its spending on tackling malaria.

In a speech to the United Nations in New York, Mr Clegg was set to reiterate the UK's commitment to raise aid spending to 0.7 per cent of gross national income from 2013.

The West End star, who acquired a reputation as a "love rat" after dating a series of actresses including Anna Friel, Tracy Shaw and Suzanne Shaw, will join the Channel 4 show next month.

London: A friend of murdered teenager Stephen Lawrence revealed he is considering running for Mayor of London. Liberal Democrat councillor Duwayne Brooks was with Mr Lawrence when the black 18-year-old was stabbed to death in what is believed to have been a racist attack. His killers were never convicted.

Birmingham: An arsenal of eight firearms, including a MAC-10 machine pistol, was seized in one police raid. West Midlands Police discovered the cache of weapons at an industrial unit in Birmingham earlier this month as part of an intelligence-led operation.
