UK News: Bishop stands down after 11 years at helm

The Bishop of Chichester, the Right Reverend Dr John Hind, announced today that he will retire next year.

The Queen and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams, have accepted Dr Hind's resignation, which will take effect next April. He will step down after 11 years.

There are 1.5 million football, 40,000 volleyball and 8000 freestyle wrestling tickets available on a first-come first-served basis.

They are being offered to the 700,000 applicants who got tickets in April.

Petrol prices see drivers turn away from pumps

Motorists bought one billion fewer litres of petrol and diesel in the first three months of this year compared with the pre-credit crunch January-March 2008 period, AA figures showed today.

Service stations sold 835 million fewer litres of petrol and 247 million fewer litres of diesel in January to March 2011 than in the same period three years earlier.

The AA said the 15.2 per cent dip in petrol sales was caused by austerity and the record fuel prices.

Pat bids farewell to square

EastEnders veteran Pam St Clement is to bow out of Albert Square, more than a quarter of a century after making her debut as no-nonsense Pat.

The actress, 69, one of the longest serving stars of the show, will leave Walford later this year.

Liverpool: A former soap star will appear in court today charged with the murder of a nightclub doorman.

Brian Regan, 53, who played Terry Sullivan in Brookside, is accused of the murder of Bahman Faraji. The father-of-one, 44, was shot dead as he left the Belgrave public house on February 24.
