Two homes in Motherwell were set alight after being hit by fireworks on Bonfire Night

A fundraising page has been set up by the community to support the two families whose homes were set on fire after being hit by fireworks last night.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that they received a call 7.53pm yesterday evening alerting them to a fire within a semi-detached two-story house on Corrie road, Motherwell.

Operations control immediately mobilised three fire engines to the scene and a spokesperson confirmed that crews left the scene at 9.53am this morning.

There are no reports of injuries.

Scott Symington, from the North Motherwell Community group set up a go fund me page to raise money for the two families whose homes have been almost destroyed by the fire.

He told the BBC: "It was set up to help these two families to get some instant much-needed support to them due to the fires in their homes.

"Especially with Christmas coming up and having to deal with the loss of belongings too, at this time of year, I just wanted to rally the community once again into helping out our local residents as fast and as much as I could."

So far, in the 13 hours since it was created, the page has raised over £1,500. The target is currently £2000.

Across Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service received more than 1100 calls from the public during an eight hour period, dealing with more than 500 bonfires on one of their busiest nights of the year. 

Assistant Chief Officer Stuart Stevens, SFRS Director of Service Delivery, said: “Bonfire Night is traditionally one of our busiest nights of the year.

"Our frontline crews and Operations Control personnel and support staff have shown extreme dedication over this period and I would like to pay tribute to their professionalism and

resilience.

"I must also thank our partners and indeed communities across Scotland for their continuing support.”
