Two held over death of man outside his home

TWO men have been arrested over the death of a man assaulted just yards from his home.

William McKeeney, 57, was attacked in Melville Street, in the Pollokshields area of Glasgow, at around 12:40am on Sunday as he walked home from a night out.

Strathclyde Police said he was subjected to a “sustained and violent” assault.

He was taken by ambulance to the Victoria Infirmary, where he died from his injuries.

Officers said two men, aged 19 and 20, have been arrested and are being held in police custody in connection with the attack. A police spokesman said a report would be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Mr McKeeney, who was originally from Donegal in the Republic of Ireland, was “extremely popular” and “well known” in the local community.

The labourer had been living in Glasgow for the past five years.

Chief Superintendent Andrew Bates, of Strathclyde Police, said: “I would like to thank the local community for their assistance and support. Without this we would not have been able to make these swift arrests.”
