Two arrests after woman dies during theft of her car

POLICE investigating the death of a woman hit by her own stolen car made a second arrest last night.

Lynda Hankey, 42, died after she was hit by her own car as it was being stolen from outside her home in Wigan yesterday afternoon.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "A 23-year-old man from Leigh was last night arrested on suspicion of murder and is being held in police custody for questioning. A 22-year-old man earlier arrested on suspicion of murder also remains in custody."

Ms Hankey had left the engine of her yellow MG sports car running when she left the vehicle briefly, find the thief sitting in the driver's seat when she returned. She had gone to her house to pick up her girlfriend, Jamie Hudson, and Ms Hudson's five-year-old son. They watched in horror as Ms Hankey was hit after she stepped into the road in an effort to prevent the theft of her car.

Ms Hankey, herself a mother of two sons, suffered serious head injuries in the incident, at around 4:20pm, and was taken to hospital where she later died. Ms Hudson was said to be "absolutely devastated".
