Two arrested over death of youth, 17

Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of a teenager at the beginning of the year.

The body of Jack Doyle, 17, was found at the rear of houses on Hope Street, near Antigua Street, Greenock, at around 9:45am on 3 January.

The men, aged 21 and 27, are being held in police custody. They are due to appear in court on Monday

Jack Doyle was the nephew of Elaine Doyle, who was killed on her way home from a disco 25 years ago. That crime has never been solved.

Jack’s body was discovered less than two miles from the spot where his aunt was found dead.

At the time of Jack’s death, his family released a statement describing him as a loving, caring and popular boy. “Our family is very close and this has totally devastated all of us. It is hard to even think that we will ever cope with the grief,” they said.

Detectives last year launched a fresh appeal for information over Elaine’s murder on 1 June, 1986.

The 16-year-old’s partially-clothed body was found the next day in a lane off Ardgowan Street, fewer than 50 yards from her home. She had been strangled and sexually assaulted.
