Turkey: Clinton contests journalist arrests

AMERICA'S secretary of state Hillary Clinton has criticised Turkey for arresting dozens of journalists, claiming the move is inconsistent with progress.

Clinton added, however, that the moderate Muslim country could still be a model for Arab nations now in the throes of revolt or transition to democracy. Speaking on a visit to Istanbul, Clinton, pictured right, said Turkey's 11 per cent growth rate was impressive and that it could inspire Arabs in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen and Syria, seeking reform.

But she deplored a government crackdown which has led to the arrest of 64 journalists. She said: "I do not think it is in Turkey's interests to be cracking down. It seems to me inconsistent with all the other advances Turkey has made."
