The family of a “unique and very precious” woman who died after apparently falling from a hospital window have paid tribute to her.

Josephine Mowat, 61, fell 30ft from a window at Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline at around 1am on Thursday, police said.

She was treated in the accident and emergency department, but died at 3:30am. She was a patient in a general medical ward.

In a statement released through Fife Constabulary yesterday, Mrs Mowat’s husband, Alfred, daughter Karen and sons David and Richard, said: “We would all like to mourn the passing of Josephine Mowat, a unique and very precious woman who was prematurely taken from the heart of a lovely family. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend to many and had so much love and compassion to give and receive. We will miss you always. God bless you xx.”

Mrs Mowat was from Cardenden, in Fife.

The family said she was well-known in the field of greyhound racing.

Police are continuing their investigations into the circumstances leading to her death.
