Firefighters battled for 90 minutes to cut her free before she was airlifted to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where she later died.

All six occupants of the Volvo - a woman and five children aged under ten - sustained injuries, none of which were life threatening.

Barbara Davie, head teacher at Fintry Primary, said yesterday: "Lorna Grant was a wonderful, inspirational teacher.

"She was innovative, creative, enthusiastic and very hard-working.

"Lorna was totally committed to her role here, loved her job, loved the children and was a joy to have on the staff.

"We are all extremely sad at this loss of someone who was well loved by her colleagues and the children.

"Our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time."

Brian Delorey, of Fife Fire and Rescue, said his team had done everything they could to save Ms Grant.

He added: "Our first problem was gaining access to the woman. It was a long and difficult operation."
