Tributes to ex-convener

TRIBUTES have been paid to a former council convener who died after suffering a heart attack while clearing snow.

Major Alastair Hewat collapsed outside his home near Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire, on Monday.

The 76-year-old was the civic head of Scottish Borders Council between 2001 and 2003, and served as a councillor in the region for more than 20 years.
