Trawlerman fights for his life in hospital

A SPANISH fisherman was fighting for his life in hospital last night after suffering a serious head injury in a fall from a pier at a harbour on Scotland’s west coast.

The 52-year-old trawlerman was airlifted to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness after he plummeted from the quayside, between the harbour wall and a boat, at Ullapool harbour in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A Coastguard rescue helicopter based at Stornoway felw the injured seaman from the Wester Ross harbour.

A spokesman for Northern Constabulary said: “Police were called to respond to reports that a man had fallen from the pier. He suffered a head injury and was taken by the Stornoway Coastguard helicopter to hospital where his condition is described as life threatening. There do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances.”
