Wishaw crash: Two teenagers who died in collision have been identified

Two teenagers who died following a crash in Wishaw this week have now been identified.

Derek Paton, 19, and Leon Fitzpatrick, 18, both from Wishaw, died following a collision involving a van and an off-road motorcycle at about 4.30pm on Thursday, near the junction with Waverley Drive.

Derek was the rider and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Leon, who had been riding as a pillion passenger, was taken to University Hospital Wishaw where he later died from his injuries.

A 34-year-old male driver of a white Volkswagen Crafter van who was also involved in the fatal crash suffered minor injuries.

The road was closed until about 11pm as officers carried out investigations on the scene.

Sergeant Ryan McAuley, of the Road Policing Unit in Motherwell, said: “Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this crash.

“Our enquiries to establish the full circumstances are ongoing and we would urge anyone with information to come forward.
