ScotRail services on routes west of the capital’s main station were cancelled or delayed by the fault from 1:30pm, which is the responsibility of Network Rail.

They included trains on the main Glasgow line via Falkirk being halved in frequency to half-hourly, while services on a secondary Glasgow route via Airdrie were halted between Edinburgh and Bathgate.

Trains on the Edinburgh-Dunblane route were also down to half their normal frequency, with only one an hour.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “Services from Waverley are subject to delays and cancellation at present due to signalling fault. Repairs will be carried out as soon as possible.”

The fault follows a series of heat-related problems around Waverley last week which delayed or cancelled more than 370 trains.

A set of points just west of the station were affected by high temperatures, while a speed restriction was imposed on track west of Haymarket station in the city’s west end, also because of the heat.
