Unborn baby dies in Aberdeenshire car crash

AN UNBORN baby has died following a two car crash on a notorious stretch of road in Aberdeenshire in which a 27 year-old pregnant woman was injured, it was revealed today.

The baby was pronounced dead at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after the unidentified woman, believed to have been seven months pregnant, was rushed to hospital following the collision yesterday at the village of Marykirk on the A937 Montrose to Laurencekirk road.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said today: “Police Scotland can advise that following a two vehicle road traffic collision on the A937 at Marykirk, sadly a baby has died. The collision occurred about 10.48am yesterday and involved a black BMW and a silver BMW.

“Following the collision, a pregnant 27 year-old female was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and tragically the baby died.”

She added: “The A937 at Marykirk is currently closed to allow collision investigations to take place.”

Sergeant Rob Warnock, from Aberdeenshire and Moray’s Road Policing Unit who is leading the investigation into the collision, said: “This is a tragic incident where sadly a baby has died. Our sympathies at this very difficult time are with the families affected by this collision.

“We are appealing for witnesses who may have seen either of the vehicles prior to the collision. Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101.”

He added: “A report on the circumstances will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal in due course.”
