Two killed as car plunges into canal in Glasgow

Tributes have been paid to two people killed when the car they were in crashed and struck a wall before plunging into a canal.

Driver Kieran Lundie, 21, and passenger Gemma McMonagle, 24, were both killed in the incident just before 1am yesterday on Balmore Road in north Glasgow. Both of them lived in the city.

Police said Mr Lundie lost control of his blue Ford Focus which then hit a wall and then railings before plunging into the Forth and Clyde Canal near Lambhill Cemetery.

A 25-year-old woman who was also in the car is in critical condition in the city’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, police said.

Two other male passengers, one aged 24 and another 25, are being treated in hospital for non-serious injuries.

It is understood keen Celtic fan Mr Lundie, whose nickname was Nemo, had a three-year-old son.

Dozens of flowers and messages were placed at the scene of the crash yesterday.

A Celtic FC strip covered with hand-written messages to Mr Lundie was tied to a fence at the spot where the car entered the water.

Friends of the two victims, who were both pronounced dead at the scene, also paid tribute to them on social media yesterday.

Rachael McCallie said: “So sad reading this. Gutted. Horrible news, group of young people we know in a crash last night...Rip Nemo, xx to a girl that got killed as well and to the others in critical condition. So sad! Thoughts with all the family & friends. Too young to be gone with the angels xx.”

Sophie Thomson paid tribute and said: “I can’t believe this is true. I know you are at peace with your dad. Heaven has gained another angel.”

Nichola Reid said: “Rip beautiful girl,can’t believe ur gone Gemma Mcmonagle, u will b missed by everyone. Can’t believe this horrible news, thinking of everyone xx.”

Sergeant Nicola Taylor of Police Scotland said: “Our inquiries are continuing into the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

“It would appear that no other vehicle was involved and I would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this crash.”

She said a report would be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
