Tributes paid to gran killed on Aberdeenshire road

A GRIEVING family today paid tribute to the “caring and wonderful” grandmother who was killed on Monday when she was struck by a black Ford Focus on a rural road in Aberdeenshire.

Margaret Laing, 79, from the Aberdeen area, was killed shortly after she got out of a parked Vauxhall Meriva on the B977 Dyce to Hatton of Fintray road.

A 78 year-old man and a 92 year-old woman, who were passengers in the Meriva which Ms Laing had been driving, were rushed by ambulance to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment following the collision.

Mrs Laing is survived by her husband Alan, 78, sons Alan, 55, and wife Jennifer, and Ian, 52, and partner Diane. She was also grandmother to Matthew, aged 12.

Speaking on behalf of the family, her son Alan said in a statement released by Police Scotland that his mother had devoted her life to caring for other people and was full-time carer for her husband.

He said: “She grew up in the Inverurie area before training as a nurse and working at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and Aberdeen Children’s Hospital. We are all absolutely devastated by her death. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, aunt and friend.”

Mr Laing continued: “She was a very kind person and would do anything to help others. She was an active person with a good sense of humour. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.”

Earlier this week Edward Shaw, 50, from Inverurie, appeared in private at Aberdeen Sheriff Court, charged with causing death by dangerous driving and drink driving. He made no plea or declaration and was granted bail.
