A police spokesman said yesterday: “Grampian Police can confirm that a 17-year-old male has died following the one-vehicle road traffic collision on Strichen Road, Fraserburgh, earlier today.

“Grampian Police, Grampian Fire and Rescue and the Scottish Ambulance Service were all called to the scene shortly after 6am this morning, when a red Vauxhall Astra collided with a wall.”

Strichen Road was closed between King Edward Street and Grattan Place for most of the day to allow crash scene investigators to carry out a detailed examination of the accident scene.

Inspector Ewan Innes from Grampian Road Policing department, who was one of the officers who attended the scene of the crash, said: “Our inquiries are at a very early stage and it is too early to speculate as to the cause of the collision.

“Tragically a young male has lost his life and this will obviously be a particularly difficult time for his family and friends, and my thoughts are with them at this sad time.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have any information relating to this collision to contact us, particularly any residents in the area who may have seen or heard anything just prior to the collision.”

Anyone who has any information relating to the collision can contact Grampian Police on 0845 600 5700 or the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
