The accident happened last December, barely three weeks before six people were killed in the George Square tragedy in Glasgow.

Peter Wills, a former teacher and SNP activist, had been out on his buggy on Sheriffmuir Road, near Bridge of Allan in Stirlingshire, when he was hit by a vehicle operated by Stirling Council.

Yesterday, Police Scotland confirmed that following investigations, a 42-year-old man has been charged with careless and inconsiderate driving.

A police spokesman said:”Extensive enquiries were conducted by the Stirling Road Policing Unit to determine the full circumstances surrounding the collision, which occurred on 3rd December 2014.

“A 42-year-old man has been charged with causing death by careless and inconsiderate driving.

“The man will appear in court at a later date.”

A Stirling Council spokesperson said:“The individual who has been charged is no longer an employee of Stirling Council and we will work to cooperate with the police in any way possible.”

After suffering a severe stroke, the dead man was in the habit of using his electric wheelchair to travel the two miles from his home to a local reservoir to get some air.
