Start of four-week Glasgow Subway shutdown still undecided

A four-week shutdown of the Glasgow Subway will not start until after the start of the school summer holidays in June, operator Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) said today.

It said track improvements would begin sometime after the city’s schools break up on 24 June, but no date has been finalised.

Buses will replace trains during the work on access tunnels from the Govan train depot.

Subway staff may be switched to sell tickets for the bus service, or to other duties.

SPT said the summer was the quietest time for the circular system, which carries 12.6 million passengers a year.

It will celebrate its 120th birthday as the world’s third oldest underground railway in December.

An SPT spokeswoman said: “We have not finalised dates for the Subway suspension yet.

“It will be during the school summer holidays, for approximately four weeks, during our quietest period.

“Once we have finalised the dates, we will inform passengers about the suspension and let them know about the alternative bus service planned.”

She said the closure was for “essential works relating to the replacement of track bed, rails and equipment in the ramps and turnout areas of the Subway.”
