Signallers’ strike set to cut services

RAIL passengers face two days of cancelled trains this month after signallers announced further strikes in their dispute over career progression.

Network Rail expects to have to cancel around 100 ScotRail services on both Monday 23 and Friday 27 January during the walkouts by the Rail Maritime and Transport union.

This will reduce the frequencies of trains on some routes from Glasgow Central by up to half. The stoppages, involving 32 staff at the west of Scotland signalling centre, are due to halt a similar number of trains as during the first strike on Christmas Eve.

Services are expected to be cut to one train an hour to Barrhead, Paisley Canal and Whifflet, and on the Cathcart Circle via Maxwell Park. Glasgow-Gourock trains are also expected to be cut from three to two per hour.

Managers will cover for strikers on other services.
