Scottish mountains have claimed 14 lives this year

DANIEL Maddox is the 14th person to die on Scotland’s mountains this year – and the eighth in an avalanche.

In January, four experienced climbers were killed in an avalanche on Bidean Nam Bian.

Rachel Majumdar, 29, Tom Chesters, 28, Christopher Bell, pictured right, 24, and Una Finnegan, 25, are thought to have fallen 1,000ft in the incident on 19 January, just ten miles from Glencoe Ski Centre.

Then in February, three climbers died in hospital after an avalanche in the Cairngorms. Rimon Than, 33, and Fran Capps, 32, both members of the RAF, and William Currie, 18, were airlifted from the Chalamain Gap area to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on 14 February. However, they later died of their injuries.
