ScotRail announces more Edinburgh Festival trains

• ScotRail announces new extra trains on several routes, including Stirling, Helensburgh and Fife

• Service from Glasgow to Edinburgh via Falkirk will remain unchanged

The train operator announced today a brand new train to Glenrothes via Dunfermline at one minute to midnight on Fridays and 15 extra daytime trains on the Stirling line on Sundays, while six services on the Helensburgh-Glasgow-Airdrie route will be extended to and from Edinburgh on Sunday mornings for the first time.

However, extra Festival services on ScotRail’s busiest route, the main line to Glasgow via Falkirk, will be unchanged on last year, with trains leaving Edinburgh nightly at one minute past midnight and 12:30am.

In addition, there will again be one extra late night train on the North Berwick and Bathgate-Glasgow-Garscadden lines on Fridays and Saturdays, and an extra one to Dundee.

ScotRail said the services from 2 August comprised its biggest Festival timetable, with extra carriages added to many existing services.

It was forced to add dozens of extra carriages to weekend Festival trains last year following complaints of overcrowding.

ScotRail managing director Steve Montgomery said: “We have continued to expand the Festivals timetable - new services for Fife, Stirling and the west of Scotland - so that even more customers can enjoy the exciting events in the capital.

“We will use all carriages available to us, but we know that some services – particularly last trains home – will still be busy.”

Tickets for the Fringe will again be sold at a box office at Glasgow Queen Street station, from 26 July, following last year’s successful introduction.
