Scotland's weather: Storms bring power cuts and flash floods

According to SSE, more than 100 properties in the Perthshire area suffered a power outage, along with homes in the Moray towns of Keith and Dufftown; Turiff and St Katherines in Aberdeenshire and Cults in Aberdeen.

Residents in East Lothian also reported a loss of Sky services, while a slip road at Eurocentral near Glasgow had to be closed after surface water gathered and images from Glasgow city centre showed cars ploughing through flooded streets.

There were lightning strikes across Scotland, as intense thundery showers rolled across from the west coast.

Denny Old Paris Church was damaged after being struck by lightning, although firefighters called to the building reported that no fire had broken out.

Heavy rain and lightning closed some public buildings in Inverness and the Highlands, while further south, hailstones ‘the size of gobstoppers’ were reported in Annan.

Up to 50mm of rain is expected in the Scottish Borders region before the storm moves towards north east, according to the local authority.

And the Met Office has warned people of the risk of flash flooding, adding: “Frequent lightning, large hail and strong winds could be additional hazards. All of this could lead to flooding of homes, buisiness and transport networks.”

Met Office meteorologist Alex Burkhill added: “We have had the hottest day of the year and we still have warm, humid conditions across much of the UK.

“There’s heavy thundery showers across northern parts, with frequent lightning and intense downpours.

“On Thursday there will be some showers but not as heavy and it will be generally dry for many. There will be temperatures of 25-26C for some, which is above average.”

Temperatures have reportedly peaked following Tuesday’s highs, and the coming days and nights should feel fresher, he added.
