Scotland's weather: More "tricky" driving conditions from ice and slush today

Motorists face a second day of 'tricky' driving conditions after the Met Office issued another severe weather warning for ice.

The agency also warned of of snow above 200m and slushy conditions even at low levels.

The latest yellow - “be aware” - warning came into force at 1:20pm and continues until 10am tomorrow, following a similar one last night.It covers the western half of the Central Belt and the west coast from Fort William to the Border, as well as north west England and north Wales.

Temperatures dipped to their lowest of the autumn last night, with -7.2C recorded at Braemar in Aberdeenshire.

The cold could be even more widespread by tomorrow night, with -7C expected in places such as Aviemore, and Kinbrace in Sutherland, -4C at Huntly in Aberdeenshire, -3C at Jedburgh in the Borders, and -2C in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Wintry showers, continuing during Friday and overnight, will lead to the possibility of ice forming as temperatures fall this evening and overnight.“This will occur primarily on untreated surfaces, but perhaps also where grit is washed off by frequent showers.“Additionally, 1-3 cm of snow may accumulate on hills above around 200m, and more than 5cm above 400m.“Some of the heaviest showers could produce slushy conditions even at low levels.“Please be aware of possible tricky travel conditions.”The Met Office said a cold north-westerly airstream would continue to bring heavy showers or rain, sleet, snow and hail during the warning period.Clear spells in between would allow temperatures to fall close to or below freezing, causing the likelihood of ice.
