The agency said the gales could cause travel disruption and power cuts.

It issued a yellow - be aware - severe weather alert which will be in force from 5pm tomorrow until 4am on Sunday.

It said bridges, headlands and hills were expected to be hit with the strongest winds.

Elsewhere, there will be 50-60mph gusts “quite widely”.

An agency spokesman said: “A rapidly deepening depression is expected to cross northern Scotland on Saturday night, bringing very strong west to south-westerly winds on its southern flank.

“In addition to strong winds, large waves will affect sea fronts.

“There is still some uncertainty regarding the track and intensity of the depression, and therefore the areas at greatest risk of disruptive winds.”
