Scotland's most popular Uber destinations

A UNIVERSITY halls of residence is among the most popular destinations in Scotland for passengers using controversial taxi app Uber.

The large number of students who have embraced the service has led to Pollock Halls topping the destination chart in Edinburgh, while Sauchiehall Street is the most requested stop-off in Glasgow.

Uber launched in the capital last October and followed in Glasgow a month later.

The top three destinations for Uber passengers in Edinburgh are Pollock Halls, George Street and Festival Square.

In Glasgow most passengers head to Sauchiehall Street, Renfrew Street or Jamaica Street.

Customers have to download and create an account with the app, which then allows them to book, track and pay for journeys.

There are also plans to expand the service to Aberdeen and other Scottish towns and cities.

The company said it already has more than 65,000 registered users in the capital.

Les McVay, company secretary of City Cabs – Edinburgh’s oldest taxi company – said in November that he “welcomed” the competition, adding he throught cut-price costs were unsustainable in the long run.

A spokeswoman for Uber said the company had been “overwhelmed” by the response the company had received in Scotland.

“Our growth is led by word of mouth with both riders and drivers referring friends to Uber,” the spokeswoma said.

“Two thirds of new partners joining the Uber platform in the UK have been referred by another driver which speaks to the opportunity, freedom and flexibility that the Uber app provides.”

Customers in Edinburgh hit out at Uber following huge price increases over Hogmany which saw some routine journeys costing as much as four times a normal black cab.
