Royal Marine among A9 Aviemore car crash victims

A 23-year-old Royal Marine commando died in a four-vehicle pile-up on the A9 in the Highlands.

The tragic accident on Monday afternoon involved a military lorry, another heavy goods vehicle, a car transporter and a car.

A spokesman for the Royal Navy said: “We can confirm that a Royal Marine has died in Scotland and that his next of kin have been informed.

“The thoughts and sympathies of the Naval Service are with the family and friends at this sad time. The incident is currently under investigation therefore it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

The 23-year-old died at the scene of the crash on the A9 near Aviemore at around 4pm on Monday.

Five others injured in the smash south of Granish were taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness for treatment.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We can confirm that a 23-year-old male sustained fatal injuries as a result of the road traffic collision which occurred on the A9 about one mile south of the Granish junction.

It was the second death on the A9 in the Highlands in two days.

Elizabeth Williams, 72, of Thurso, died when the Jaguar she was travelling in was involved in a five collision on the A9 south of Dunbeath in the Highlands. Several other people sustained minor injuries in the crash at 2pm on Sunday.

Meanwhile, police have also named the victim of a crash on the A970 road in Cunningsburgh, Shetland, on Sunday afternoon.

Michael Robertson, from nearby Sandwick, died when his car was in collision with another car at around 3.30pm.
