Railway signal workers could strike over 12-hour shifts

RAILWAY signal workers are being balloted for industrial action in a dispute over rosters.

The RMT union has been trying to negotiate 12-hour shifts for signallers in the Stirling area but says Network Rail has so far refused.

Union officials have informed management that all affected members will vote on going on strike and on taking industrial action short of a strike.

RMT general secretary Bob Crow said: “RMT will not allow Network Rail to ride roughshod over the clear democratic will of our members and we are urging staff to vote strongly in favour of industrial action in this ballot.

“Papers are due to be dispatched by the independent scrutineer today, Wednesday 4 April 2012, with a closing date of Wednesday 18 April 2012.

“Although management have so far refused to budge, a meeting is due to take place shortly, at which we hope progress can be made in resolving this matter.”
