£5m bypass at Crianlarich to ease A82 traffic

A £5million bypass is to be constructed at Crianlarich to ease congestion on the A82.

Transport Scotland has announced it intends to award a contract for the work to RJ McLeod Ltd.

The new 1.3 kilometre single two-lane road to the west of the village will help to reduce congestion at the site where the A82 and A85 trunk roads currently meet.

The centre of the village is particularly heavy during the tourist season. The bypass will also help traffic to avoid the low bridges.

Subject to a mandatory standstill period, the contractors will begin construction in the coming weeks.

Much of the work will take place outside the existing road and traffic management will be kept to a minimum.

The Crianlarich Bypass is set to be completed by next summer.

Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure, Investment and Cities, Nicola Sturgeon said: “The Scottish Government is committed to improving Scotland’s transport infrastructure and the announcement of the intention to award today further cements our investment in the A82, which is also undergoing significant investment at Pulpit Rock through a £9.2 million road widening scheme.

“Communities and businesses will benefit greatly from the works on this route, which links the western Highlands with Fort William and the Highlands and Western Isles with Glasgow and the Central Belt, by improving access to the village and making it a more pleasant destination for locals and tourists alike while enabling others to continue their journeys without unnecessary delays.”
