£2.1m drive to improve road

WORK began yesterday on a £2.1 million improvement scheme at a notorious accident blackspot in Angus.

The two-mile stretch of bends on the A92 between Arbroath and Montrose – known locally as the “Big Tree Bends” – has been the scene of three fatal accidents in the past three years. The road improvement scheme will involve the bends at Hawkhill and Courthill being bypassed.

David May, convener of Angus Council’s infrastructure services committee, said: “I am delighted to see work start on site at Big Tree Bends, bringing significant safety improvements at this location, which has long exhibited a poor accident record.”
