£1m subway deal is agreed

CONTRACTS worth £1 million for upgrading the Glasgow Subway were agreed yesterday in the latest stage of the underground railway’s modernisation.

The move came days before the subway – the world’s third oldest after London and Budapest – celebrates its 115th birthday on Wednesday.

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, which runs the six-mile line, is to revamp the subway depot at Broomloan in Govan, including adding a new heating system.

This is required before new trains – which may be operated with no staff on board – are ordered. A three-year contract to clean the Subway’s 36 train carriages, worth almost £450,000, was also included in the investment.

SPT chair Jonathan Findlay said: “It is vital the subway is able to sustain the excellent standards it has set over the years and continues to be the fastest and easiest way to get around Glasgow.”
