The pair, who are believed to be Asian, were waiting at traffic lights near the Braehead shopping centre in Renfrewshire when a man in a white Land Rover Discovery drove up beside them.

He got out of his car and subjected the men to the volley of racial slurs.

When the traffic lights changed, the victims’ car drove off, closely followed by the suspect’s vehicle, onto the M8 motorway.

The incident, which happened at about 7pm on Saturday on Old Govan Road, was reported to police by a number of other drivers who saw it happen.

Police Scotland said the victims themselves have yet to report the matter to the force but officers said they would like to speak to them as a matter of urgency.

Officers are reviewing CCTV images from the area to find out as much detail as possible about the hate crime.

A police spokesman said: “There is no room in our society for racial abuse and it is not acceptable to treat people in such a manner.

“I have no doubt that this incident caused individuals considerable distress, but I would like to reassure them that this matter is under investigation and I am urging them to get in touch with us so that we can continue to progress our investigation.

“I would like to thank the members of the public who contacted police to report the matter, indicating clearly that people in Scotland will not tolerate racism.

“If anyone has any additional information or knowledge, please do get in touch with us.”
