Police condemn ‘appalling’ speeds of Moray drivers

And they appealed to drivers to slow down and obey speed limits after three motorists were recorded at speeds of between 89mph and 101mph on roads controlled by 60 mph limits.

A force spokesman said: “On Wednesday, 21 August, one person was stopped for driving at 89mph and another detected driving at 93mph on the A96 near Keith. On Thursday, 22 August, a motorist was detected on the B9089 between Kinloss and Burghead doing 101mph. This road has been subject of numerous complaints and is subject to regular speed checks by Police Scotland.

“All three drivers were reported to the Procurator Fiscal.”

A spokesman for the Aberdeenshire and Moray Divisions Road Policing Unit said: “I am appalled at some of the speeds detected on the roads in the Moray area over the last couple of evenings. These high speeds were recorded between 6 pm and 7 pm in the evening when roads are busy with vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians and I find it unbelievable that some motorists are willing to put lives at risk in such a manner. Speed limits are there for a reason and if motorists adhere to them our roads would be a safer place.”

The spokesman also revealed: “At a recent child car seat safety clinic at Tesco in Buckie, twenty child seats were checked by road safety experts and of these twenty, seventeen were incorrectly fitted. Nine had major faults, one was incompatible with the vehicle and two were incompatible with the child. What these results show is that there are a lot of child seats out there that are not properly fitted and may not protect a child from serious injury in the manner they are intended to.

“I would urge all motorists with child seats to check their handbooks to ensure the seats are correctly fitted.”
